Porcelain is at the heart of every piece. I work with a fine white porcelain clay, which I cut, shape, draw on, glaze and fire in my studio in Harrogate. Depending on the design, pieces may also include sterling silver, gold or platinum lustre and carefully selected jewellery findings.
Because everything is made by hand, no two pieces are ever exactly the same — something I particularly love about working with porcelain.
-
Porcelain is a fine, high-fired ceramic material. Although it begins as a soft clay, firing transforms it into something strong, light and beautifully tactile.
I particularly love the contrast between its clean white surface and the marks, drawings and occasional imperfections created through making by hand
-
Colour, line and pattern are applied directly to the porcelain using a mixture of ceramic colour, underglaze, drawing and mark-making.
Some designs are quite graphic, while others are much quieter. The small variations in line, colour and surface are part of the character of each piece rather than something I try to remove.
-
Yes, but not on everything. Some pieces are glazed to create a smooth, glossy surface, while others are left matte so you can see and feel the porcelain itself.
I often use both finishes within the same piece of jewellery because I love the contrast between matte and glazed porcelain.
-
This varies between collections and individual designs. I use sterling silver in selected pieces, alongside quality jewellery findings appropriate to each design. Some porcelain pieces also feature genuine gold or platinum lustre, which is fired onto the surface of the porcelain.
The materials used will always be included in the individual product description.
-
The metal used for earring fittings will be stated in the individual product description, so you can check before purchasing. If you have a particular metal sensitivity, please contact me before ordering and I’ll be happy to tell you exactly what has been used.
-
Surprisingly, no. Porcelain can be very light, particularly when it is made in the thin forms I use for jewellery.
Even some of my larger earrings are designed to feel comfortable to wear.
-
An occasional splash of water shouldn’t harm fired porcelain, but I recommend removing your jewellery before showering, swimming or bathing.
Water, perfume, creams and household products can affect metal components and surface finishes over time, so putting your jewellery on last, after perfume and cosmetics, will help keep it looking its best.

Porcelain is strong once fired, but like other ceramics it can break if dropped onto a hard surface or subjected to a strong impact.
Treat it as you would any piece of handmade jewellery: store it carefully, avoid dropping it and keep it protected when travelling.
And remember, those tiny differences in surface, shape and mark are part of its handmade character. Every piece is intentionally individual.

-
hope you’ll love your piece, but if you change your mind, please contact me as soon as possible after receiving your order.
Items must be returned unworn and in their original condition and packaging. For hygiene reasons, earrings for pierced ears cannot normally be returned unless faulty.
Please see the full Returns Policy for current return periods, conditions and instructions.
-
Please contact me as soon as possible and include a photograph of the item and its packaging. I’ll work with you to put things right.
-
Please get in touch. Because every piece is handmade, an exact replacement may not always be possible, but depending on the design I may be able to repair it, replace an individual porcelain component or suggest another solution
-
If you need to cancel an order, contact me as soon as possible. If it hasn’t yet been dispatched or work hasn’t begun on a made-to-order piece, I’ll do my best to help.
-
Occasionally. I don’t currently offer a full bespoke jewellery service, but if you have seen a piece you love and would like to ask about a variation, please get in touch.
Because everything is made individually by hand, I can’t promise an exact copy of another piece — and, in truth, that individuality is part of Whispered Porcelain.
-
Yes. Whispered Porcelain is available for selected gallery and independent retail partnerships. If you are interested in stocking the work, please get in touch and tell me a little about your gallery or shop.
-
The easiest way is through the contact page on this website. I’m a small independent studio, so you’ll be contacting me directly.
I’ll get back to you as soon as I can — although if I’m in the middle of making or firing a kiln, it may not always be immediately!
